Clinical Externships

Clinical Externships

Equine Veterinary Hospital of Northern Indiana (EVH) is a four-doctor, equine-only practice located in northern Indiana. Established in 2006, our practice focuses on providing comprehensive, high-quality, non-surgical care to a diverse population of horses. Our client base includes sport horses, working horses, exotics, Western and English show horses, trail horses, and backyard pets.

Our Facility

Our facility is located in Wakarusa, Indiana, just a few miles from South Bend. Our hospital includes:

  • 165’ x 320’ outdoor and 65’ x 120’ indoor arena for lameness evaluations
  • 30 stalls, including 2 heated, humidity-controlled, and video-monitored foaling stalls, and 6 stallion stalls
  • Isolation facility for infectious disease management (under renovation)
  • Collection facilities and reproduction laboratory for semen processing and evaluation
  • Treatment area with attached medicine room
  • Staff offices and reception area
  • Heated garage for medicine storage, vet truck stocking, and equipment management

Externship Experience

This externship offers ample opportunity for motivated students to gain hands-on experience in:

  • Ultrasound
  • Palpation
  • Field surgeries (e.g., laceration repair, castrations)
  • Sport horse medicine/lameness
  • Chiropractic
  • Radiology
  • 1 and 3 meter endoscopy
  • Working horse medicine
  • Herd health management
  • Internal medicine
  • Sales work and international export
  • Triage/emergency medicine

We are willing to work with individual students to tailor their experience (as much as possible) towards their area of interest.

Work Schedule and Emergencies

Because we are a busy ambulatory practice, the expected hours may vary and can range from 40-80 hours weekly. Externs have opportunities for additional experience managing field emergencies with the veterinarian on call during weeknights and weekends.

The most common emergencies our practice sees include:

  • Colic
  • Exertional rhabdomyolysis
  • Infectious diseases (e.g., strangles)
  • Acute onset neurologic conditions (e.g., WNV, EEE, Tetanus)
  • Traumatic injuries (e.g., hit by car, fractures, cuts)

A typical day consists of a mixture of sale work, lameness evaluations, emergencies, routine vaccinations, coggins tests, dentals, chiropractic, internal medicine, and reproduction.

Housing and Stipend

Housing is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Options include a bedroom with a private bathroom in the office or a small apartment a few miles away from the hospital. Externs are responsible for their transportation to and from work.

This opportunity offers a stipend to clinical students.
