Pre-Purchase Examinations

A Pre-Purchase Exam (PPE) is a thorough veterinary assessment conducted prior to the purchase of a horse. The purpose of the PPE is to provide prospective buyers with detailed information regarding the health, soundness, and overall suitability of the horse for its intended use. This examination helps to identify any existing or potential medical conditions, injuries, or abnormalities that could affect the horse's performance or longevity at the time of the exam.

Our experienced veterinarians will conduct a comprehensive evaluation that typically includes:

  • Physical Examination: A complete inspection of the horse’s conformation, coat condition, and general health, including palpation of joints, muscles, and bones.
  • Soundness Evaluation: Assessment of the horse’s movement at various gaits to detect any signs of lameness or discomfort.
  • Flexion Tests: Tests to assess joint function and detect any underlying issues that may not be apparent during normal movement.
  • Radiographs (X-rays): Optional, but recommended for horses involved in high-performance activities. X-rays can help identify any issues with bone structure, joints, or past injuries.
  • Blood Tests, Vaccines, Coggins and Health Papers are also available at PPE’s.

Veterinary Sales Prep

Veterinary Sales Preparation is a specialized service that ensures horses are fully ready for sale by providing all necessary health documentation and veterinary checks. Our team ensures that your horse meets all requirements for sale, giving buyers confidence in the health and well-being of the animal.

This service typically includes:

  • Coggins Test: We perform an Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA) test, commonly known as the Coggins test, which is required for interstate travel and sale. A negative Coggins test result is necessary for horses being sold or transported across state lines.
  • Health Certificates: A health examination and certification confirming that the horse is free from contagious diseases and fit for sale. This documentation is required for the sale of horses, especially if they are being transported over long distances or internationally.
  • Vaccine Certificates: A signed vaccination certificate to ensure that the horse is up-to-date on core vaccines for sales and general health.
  • Parasite Control: Documentation of recent deworming treatments to ensure the horse is free from internal parasites, a critical aspect of maintaining the health and soundness of the animal.
  • Auction Statements: If the horse is being sold through an auction or public sale, we provide Auction Statements along with any other required sale work.

Lameness and Injury

Our team of veterinarians uses advanced diagnostic techniques, including lameness exams, flexion tests, diagnostic imaging (e.g., radiographs or ultrasounds), and gait analysis, to accurately identify the cause of the lameness or injury. After diagnosis, we work with you to develop a tailored treatment plan, which may include rest, physical therapy, anti-inflammatory medications, joint injections, or other therapies to promote healing and return to soundness.

Imaging Technologies

Digital Radiography

Our portable x-ray machine is available for on-farm and in hospital use. The ability to take and immediately review x-rays allows our veterinarians the ability to diagnose and create a treatment plan for your horse – often in a single visit! Our digital x-ray machine is equipped with a mobile internet source, which allows us to send x-rays to referral hospitals for surgical planning or consultations, if needed.

Digital Ultrasound

Each veterinarian has a portable ultrasound machine in their truck at all times. Ultrasound is used as a diagnostic tool: Ultrasound examination is used widely for reproduction (breeding soundness evaluations for the mare and stallion, reproductive management, pregnancy evaluations) and trans-abdominal ultrasonography. Additionally, ultrasonography can be used to examine soft tissue structures in the distal limb or other soft tissue structures, such as the abdomen. For example, ultrasound allows our doctors to pinpoint a problem area and assess the degree of damage within a tendon or ligament during a Soundness Evaluation, to monitor healing or guide needle placement during treatment.

Video Endoscopy

Video endoscopy is available in our hospital. Endoscopes are long, flexible cameras that allow direct visualization of inaccessible areas of the body, such as the airway, guttural pouches, ethmoids or stomach. These images are projected onto a screen and recorded. Endoscopy is an essential part of evaluating poor performers, upper airway obstructions, abnormal respiratory noises (“roarers”), lung disease and chokes.
